Last Wednesday morning I stood on the shore of the Bay of Fundy and watched the Bay Ferries boat sail for Digby Nova Scotia. It carried my youngest daughter who was moving to Yarmouth
The trip, however was very familiar to me. I was born in Saint John and at the age of six weeks I took my first "cruise" aboard the Princess Helene; the New Brunswick to Nova Scotia ferry. Because my dad was pastoring on Cape Sable Island, we made many trips back and forth on that boat. If I remember correctly Mum said I made thirty two in the first ten years of my life.
The Princess Helene was replaced by the first Princess of Acadia, a boat that had served the west coast of Canada as the Princess of Nanaimo. I made a trip on her in 1969 to see my grandmother
This boat was replaced by a second Princess of Acadia and I made a trip on her a few years ago to my Aunt Myrtle's funeral. Now my daughter was sailing on the Fundy Rose, the newest ferry. It was a rather strange feeling to watch that boat sail out of the harbour and to know that my daughter was going to be a "Bluenoser," like a lot of the rest of her family.
Top to Bottom:
Princess Helene
Princess of Acadia I
Princess of Acadia II
