The morning was sunny. The weather was crisp. It was forty five years ago this week that I entered Teachers College. What a ride it has been! I have worked for and with many colleagues. There has been experiences too numerous to tell. We were introduced to the overhead projector and a Wilson Wagon. I am a card carrying holder of a permit to operate a 35 mm. projector. I leaned to duplicate work with the old gel in a pan method, the ABDick Duplicator, the Gestetnor and finally the photocopier. By the time I left the classroom I had a computer for my use that made all the "toys" of my early teaching career look antique.
The best part? My students. I made life long friends with a number of them. I meet them today and I get fierce hugs. With their determination and diligence we did things that I did not consider possible for children to do. It is a heady experience to think that perhaps you contributed to make a difference in the life of a child. The kids themselves have not changed; it is the world in which we live that has changed.
My colleagues became my support system. Teachers are just like that. It is the best fraternity to which to belong. I will never forget the year my family was fractured in December. Going home the last day of school. I remember asking the principal to come to my classroom. Across the entire front of my room were teddy bears, flowers, small gifts, Christmas cooking and words of support. I told him that I had to share because no where else would you find a group of people harried with the demands of work and home who would stop to gladden my life.
